The Red Bluff Art Gallery and Newborn Portraits

I have 2 of my pieces (photography) hanging at Coco Amatrice - the chocolate shop here in town. They've been for sale there since before the "recession," and they haven't sold... so I probably need to go in there and reduce the prices... but anyway, a woman who represents the Red Bluff Art Gallery saw my work at the chocolate shop and called me several months ago to invite me to come to one of their monthly receptions and discuss the possibility of showing my photography at their exibits and contests!

I was busy and pregnant and all of that, so I had been putting it off... until tonight.

I rode with the woman (her name's Bonnie) and her husband (and Josiah, of course) up to Red Bluff this evening to attend the reception, meet the owners, and give them my bio so they could get an idea of my style and stuff like that... It was pretty fun. Josiah was the main attraction, even amongst all of the beautiful art, which wasn't a surprise to his proud momma ;)

There were a lot of people there, and I guess there's usually even more - about 300 or so at an average reception - when it's not the fourth of July weekend... so that's really good exposure for the artists who display their work there!

It was a good experience for me and has made me start thinking again about where I would like to go with my photography, and what I might like to specialize in...

After experimenting with newborn photography over the last several months, first with Lucy and then with Norah and Josiah, I have gotten an idea of what works and what doesn't... and I'm pretty sure that I want to make newborn and child photography my specialty... and I'm totally stoked and passionate about it!!

I already have two newborn sessions scheduled for this weekend, and I have tons of ideas for them! Both families called me because they saw Norah's photos and liked what they saw!

One thing I like about newborn photography (besides the obvious, like cuteness galore!) is that you can get the studio look without an elaborate set-up... I mean it doesn't require a whole adult-sized backdrop and lighting and stuff. You can do it in any fairly darkened room on anyone's bed, in just about anyone's house.

And you can do it year-round... Since I don't have a studio, I usually have to wait for decent weather to do outdoor portraits for adults and older children - but newborns are so small that black fabric thrown over a small bed or couch, and a darkened room is all you need! Plus, the subjects are always model quality (what newborn isn't gorgeous!?) so that always helps!!

So anyway, the Red Bluff Art Gallery is more into featuring my outdoor photography, like the yellow ginko leaves print, the orchids, the point cabrillo lighthouse, and multnomah falls... things like that. Which is fine... I will probably show those pieces there over the next several months and years... but the best thing that has come out of this whole experience so far is that it has gotten my juices flowing about my photography business in general, and especially my new specialty - newborn portraits!

I'll let you know how it goes!!

Oh, and by the way, I do have one handsome little practice model, wouldn't you say? :)
