Advent

I've been enjoying all of the wonderful ideas for celebrating advent with kids that my friends have shared, and that I have found on other blogs. We borrowed a simple fabric advent calendar from the Wions, where you take one character (like a shepherd, animal, angel, etc.) out of a pocket each day, and add it to the manger scene above (velcro) --and on Christmas eve, you place baby Jesus in the manger. James has enjoyed it.

We also borrowed a book and ornament set from them that explains the various names given to Jesus, such as "Immanuel," "door," "lamb," "lion," and so on. I love it because it reveals Jesus for who He is in all of His many wonderful aspects, and not only a baby in a manger. There is an ornament for your tree for each of the names. After we read about one of the names of Jesus, we put an ornament on the tree. So far we have done two ornaments. James can now tell you that Immanuel means "God is with us," and that Jesus is the door to the Father's house. We talked about how Jesus came as a baby-king at the first Christmas, but when He comes again, He is going to be a warrior-king; a lion; a man; a mighty king. And He will come with power. James just learned about Jesus as the "mighty king" in Sunday School last Sunday, and he remembered that, so it fit perfectly with what we were discussing. He really amazes me with is insight. The Lord orchestrates intricate teachings about Himself, even for the little ones :-)

We have also been celebrating advent by using the Jesus Storybook Bible (the BEST, BEST, BEST children's bible that was EVER written, by the way) -- the best thing about the Jesus Storybook Bible is that it shows how every single story in the old and new testaments point to Jesus. Perfect for advent!! Here is a link to the schedule of stories, and how to use the Jesus Storybook Bible for advent: http://homewiththeboys.net/advent-with-the-jesus-storybook-bible/

You can start now! We didn't start until Dec. 6th - Son of Laughter.
