Have you noticed that the produce selection lately pretty much sucks?
Even at Trader Joe's and Raley's. Even at Costco!! Costco always has good produce, but not now!
Part of it, I know, is that it is just the dead of winter, and there are no farmer's markets, and all of that...
But it seems worse this year.
Maybe I'm just TIRED of winter!!
But it does make me think - about how so very rich we are!
I've been tossing around the idea again lately of investigating my family history in order to write a book of memories, dates, events, people...stuff my parents and grandparents remember from their childhood, and about their own parents and grandparents... It's something I've always wanted to do.
I've been re-reading Oma's story (my great grandmother, Maria Sakschewski - a woman who fled Germany to come to the states during WWII and has an incredible story that my grandma Audrey helped her record several years ago) --- when I think about that time - that era - people like Oma, who have survived war, famine, rape, murder of loved-ones, death of loved-ones, loved-ones who were lost for YEARS, or lost forever... the great depression.... WOW -
And I'm complaining about the produce selection?
I put the empty bowl on our table today for Lent. I was really tempted to put some pretty cacti in there, but an empty bowl is so much worse. The emptiness will be a better reminder than some pretty cacti. On Easter, I will fill it with some gorgeous spring flowers, like these:

And then, at the first sign of delicious heirloom tomatoes, I'm makin' THIS.
That is, IF The Lord sustains our health and wealth until then.....
