A different kind of Christmas

Today I spent the entire day Christmas shopping. I am tired. I am not sure what to think of Christmas this year. It is very different. The bitter-sweetness of it keeps surfacing around every corner..

I read the following on a blog called This Side of Sunday.... It captures what I have been feeling....

"Something is missed in our Christmas celebrations if we don't pause to remember the tragedy that makes way for the victory. The Son of God comes and there is immediately no room for him. Only the angels can yet see 'Peace on Earth'; foreshadowed in that stable-birth is the wooden cross upon which the earth will push this boy away.

That's why I love Christmas songs like 'In the Bleak Midwinter' and 'O Come O Come Emmanuel'. The first through narrative and the second through tone capture the bittersweet incompleteness of the event, even while hearing and believing and celebrating the angel's promise and the gift of God's Son, Israel's Messiah, to a weary world.

Truth is, Christmas is not merry unless a resurrection tells us so, and I think in a sense, like Good Friday, our reflections on it can both celebrate and express longing. Seeing as the incarnation and resurrection have not yet reverberated fully through the cosmos, our advent waiting is a waiting still."

Yes, our advent waiting IS a waiting still.... a waiting for Him, for his making all things right again, and new again, and beautiful, and joyful, and peaceful, and complete.

And until then, I guess Christmas will never really be all that we think it should. The first Christmas was not exactly what people expected. They expected a King, and that is what they needed. That is what WE need!! And what did they get? A baby wrapped in swaddling clothes, and lying in a manger... born to an unmarried teenager.... hmmm..... not exactly what my circumstances needed, Lord...

Revelation 12 gives us a glimpse into the spiritual realm on that first Christmas night... A bit more brutal scene than what is depicted in the kids' "Story of the First Christmas" books...

1 A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. 2 She was pregnant and cried out in pain as she was about to give birth. 3 Then another sign appeared in heaven: an enormous red dragon with seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns on its heads. 4 Its tail swept a third of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth. The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that it might devour her child the moment he was born. 5 She gave birth to a son, a male child, who “will rule all the nations with an iron scepter.”a]">[a] And her child was snatched up to God and to his throne. 6 The woman fled into the wilderness to a place prepared for her by God, where she might be taken care of for 1,260 days.

7 Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. 8 But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. 9 The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.

10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say:

“Now have come the salvation and the power
and the kingdom of our God,
and the authority of his Messiah.
For the accuser of our brothers and sisters,
who accuses them before our God day and night,
has been hurled down.
11 They triumphed over him
by the blood of the Lamb
and by the word of their testimony;
they did not love their lives so much
as to shrink from death.
12 Therefore rejoice, you heavens
and you who dwell in them!
But woe to the earth and the sea,
because the devil has gone down to you!
He is filled with fury,
because he knows that his time is short.”

13 When the dragon saw that he had been hurled to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child. 14 The woman was given the two wings of a great eagle, so that she might fly to the place prepared for her in the wilderness, where she would be taken care of for a time, times and half a time, out of the serpent’s reach. 15 Then from his mouth the serpent spewed water like a river, to overtake the woman and sweep her away with the torrent. 16 But the earth helped the woman by opening its mouth and swallowing the river that the dragon had spewed out of his mouth. 17 Then the dragon was enraged at the woman and went off to wage war against the rest of her offspring—those who keep God’s commands and hold fast their testimony about Jesus."

WOW. "woe to the earth and sea, because the devil has gone down to you." No wonder we feel so broken....

Yes, we do live in a very WEARY world....

And so we wait again, with hope and joy and expectation! HE - the baby - the Christ-child - HE will come again, and He will be like this!!!! Revelation 19 describes His second coming!

11 I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and wages war. 12 His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. 13 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. 14 The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. 15 Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.”a]">[a] He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS."

Christmas is not merry unless a resurrection tells us so....

And from Revelation 21 - more hope!!

1 Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,”a]">[a] for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’b]">[b] or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

5 He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

6 He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. 7 Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children. 8 But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death....

22 I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23 The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. 24 The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. 25 On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. 26 The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it. 27 Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life."

And more from Revelation 22 -

Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. 3 No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. 4 They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5 There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever..... 10 Then he told me, “Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this scroll, because the time is near.....

12 “Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.

14 “Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city. 15 Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.

16 “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give youa]">[a] this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.”

17 The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let the one who hears say, “Come!” Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life... 20 He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.”

Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!"

Thank you, JESUS, for this hope!! You ARE the gift!! You are the LIGHT!!

Merry Christmas!!
